Fajã do Araújo

At the easternmost tip of São Miguel Island, there is a place lost in time, where the rural traditions are still alive.
This is a tour to a place where silence is made by the sound of waves and the twittering of birds, with the eternal Azorean play of colours as a backdrop: the fresh blue of the sky and the sea and the harmonious endemic greens intermingled with the black of the volcanic rocks.
This walking trail, also known as As Portas (The Doors), starts in Pedreira and offers a unique set of attractions that make it very special: the ocean, as in almost every corner of the Azores Islands, the typical microclimate of the archipelago’s fajãs (flat land near the sea), the traditional Azorean architecture, the typical agriculture, the cultivation of potatoes, broad beans, kale, etc., and the endemic plants and birds complete the green portrait of the steep Azorean hillside.
The Fajã do Araújo, a green and blue trail along the shore, with the timeless scents of Azorean flora, inebriates its visitors with peace and simplicity.
