The Azores Bullfinch and its Habitat
The Azores Bullfinch (pyrrhula murina) is an endemic bird of São Miguel Island that can only be seen in the Serra da Tronqueira range in the Nordeste and Povoação districts, in areas of laurel forest, its natural habitat.
Laurel forest is currently confined to small areas in the archipelago of the Azores and the Azores Bullfinch is the second most endangered bird in Europe.
The tour that we propose is guided by an expert from the SPEA (Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds). First, this tour will guide you through the intervention areas of the LIFE-Priolo Project, which was carried out until 2008 and through which several areas of the natural habitat of the Azores Bullfinch were restored, as the project’s priority was to protect this endangered bird.
The tour follows a 2 km walking trail along which the tour guide will try to show the visitors the Azores Bullfinch in its natural habitat. The walk ends in the Azores Bullfinch Environmental Centre, which was specifically created to raise awareness of this bird’s situation, as well as to disseminate information about the Azores Bullfinch and the laurel forest.
