Besides abiding by the legislation in force, Tradicampo has defined, since the beginning of this project, a number of guidelines for its environmental policy:

    • Install thermal insulation materials in the houses (ceilings, walls, floor and double glasses windows) – Energy Efficiency Certificates: issued by an external entity each 5 years in according to the Portuguese legislation (Levels Casa da fonte = A, Casas do Pátio = B, Casa da Talha = A)
    • Install solar panels to heat sanitary water.
    • Acquire high efficiency (A or A+ class) household appliances and an unleaded petrol lawn mower.
    • Use only high efficiency and long-life light bulbs. (91% are LED – A+ class / and the others are low consumption light bulbs)
    • Adjust the toilets flush for a maximum of 6 litters and install water saving taps (max 9 l/min for the showers and 8 l/min for the taps)
    • Use the public sewage system to drain residual water whenever possible (“Casa da Talha”).
    • Install wood burning stoves for interior heating.
    • Not acquire devices with CFC gases.
    • Create accessibilities and install equipment that respect the concept of design for everyone.
    • Have a selective waste collection system.
    • Provide our guests with bicycles at no additional cost.
    • No needs to install Air Conditioning due to their good insulation characteristics and the natural ventilation system.
    • Install rain water recuperation cisterns for garden irrigation.

    • Register water and electricity consumption on a regular basis.
    • Unplug the fridges when justifiable.
    • Turn off every electronic device on the ON/OFF button.
    • Filter the pool water at night (a time when energy is mostly provided by geothermal plants).
    • Supplement the heating of sanitary hot water during the night (when necessary) and control / optimize the time it takes.
    • Forbid smoking inside the buildings.
    • Not use pesticides and fertilisers in the gardens.
    • Promote the composting of yard waste from gardening.
    • Provide the guests with detailed information on outdoor activities and on public transportation schedules.
    • Provide information on how the equipment works to optimise its use.
    • Change towels every four days and bed linen on a weekly basis unless the customer asks for a different frequency; towel and linen changing policy is available for the guests and as well clear instructions are provided to the housekeepers.
    • Correct use of cleaning and disinfecting products with eco-labels that contain biodegradable chemical agents.
    • Inspect the installations and equipment on a regular basis to prevent the spilling of water according to a detailed maintenance plan.
    • The food and beverage products provided in the houses come from local producers.

In Tradicampo EcoCountry Houses there are three relevant environmental aspects to be considered: energy, water and waste.

The electric energy consumption was optimized form the beginning thanks to the installation of solar panels for the water heating process, thanks to the utilization of LED lighting, to the purchase of class A or A + household appliances, and to the installation of firewood heaters. The use of the firewood system instead of electric heaters is specially encouraged during the check-in process.

The consumption is controlled and recorded monthly. Some measures are being adopted to allow its sustainable reduction, mainly in the operating hours for additional heating of hot water and pool pump. Its operation occurs at night time, when the power supplied by the network comes in almost all of geothermal power plants.

To reduce the hours of the circulation pump pool water operation and the use of chemicals for the water maintenance, a wintering technique is used (from December to March)

Additionally, guests are invited to work through various suggestions left in the Handbook of each House.

As a result of these actions, it has been registered a decline (globally for the three houses) of the medium energy consumption per guest and per night:

The consumed water is used almost exclusively for the bathroom, the kitchen and for houses cleaning. Thanks to good levels of rainfall, the need of watering the gardens is practically nonexistent in Nordeste area. The only exception is for the swimming pool (Casas do Pátio) where water from the public network is used. Registration and a monthly monitoring of water consumption is performed.

All taps of sanitary facilities are equipped with flow reducers (max 9 l/min for the showers and 8 l/min for the taps) and the maximum volume used per flush in toilets is set for 6 liters.

According to the Preparation Plan of facilities are carried out regular inspections of all taps and flush toilets in order to prevent any leak or spill.

It can be verified a trend towards the stabilization of consumption per guest and per night:

The waste is recycled and divided in plastics, glass, paper, organic waste and undifferentiated wastes. The organic wastes are dumped in compositing bins that were installed outside the houses. The rest is picked up by the public services to be as well recycled. Other wastes, like cells and lamps for example, are left separately in the closest garbage Eco point.

Tradicampo made available to its Guests by the end of 2018 daily hygiene products in bathrooms packaged in individual doses. In the 4th quarter of 2018 soap dispensers and shower gel/shampoo dispensers were installed next to the showers and washbasins of all accommodation units. The products packed in single doses will be used (in parallel with the dispensers) until the existing stock is finished.
